Yesterday I attended a talk by Dr Louise Menton about the work she is doing concerning the mental health of our young people.
By age 17, over 40% of young people have some sort of mental disorder and the typical onset of mental illness is before people reach 25. There is a very large suicide and depression rate.
At the onset of puberty there is a massive increase in the number of brain cells then between 15 and 25 there is a massive pruning of brain cells.
Wow this certainly does tell us we need to take care of what our kids watch, play and associate with. Dr Menton is researching more about brain training games as a prevention strategy. She uses the much advertised Lumosity. Personally I use Brain HQ from Posit Science which was recommended by Norman Doige author of “The Brain That Heals Itself”.
We certainly also know that TV, films and computer games are hypnotic and have a very significant effect and make actual physical changes to our brains as does watching or viewing pornography.
During those early teenage years, from around 11years old, we should be taking very great care of what our kids are taking in.
And be thinking about how we can minimise the stresses our kids have to cope with or help them if we can see them getting overwhelmed. Yes I can help people back to calm if the become overwhelmed by events, bullying, abuse, or just too much pressure. However my main reason to share this is so that we can prevent problems in our families.
My kindest regards
