Quit smoking cold turkey is a difficult and stressful process and some people find it very hard indeed. It is not simply a matter of willpower.
The problem is that your conscious mind and your unconscious mind are having a massive disagreement. A really good analogy is watching a small child throwing a major tantrum and even if you don’t have kids, I’m sure that you have had the experience of seeing and hearing this in the supermarket at times.
Your unconscious mind is like a 3-5 year old – very literal and very relentless in its determination to keep you doing what you have previously programmed to “keep you safe”.
A typical smoker takes up smoking as a teenager to fit in with their peer group and be “safe” from being left out or called names. So you programmed your unconscious mind to keep you smoking to keep you safe.
Now you need to change your mind and, in many cases your unconscious mind throws a tantrum, raises your stress levels and can make you very unpleasant to be around.
